Costa Rica is well-known for its tremendous biodiversity - particularly considering its size (comparable in area to Switzerland or West Virginia, USA). There are over 9,500 identified species of plants including over 1,900 trees, 1,600 orchids, and over 800 ferns. New species are being identified on a regular basis.
Because of its geographical location in Mesoamerica, it's wide variety of temperatures and rainfall, and its topography, Costa Rica has 12 of the 38 Holdridge Life Zones (think of these as ecosystems).
This gallery only contains images of plants native to Costa Rica.
