Biologists consider to Costa Rica to be in the top twenty nations in terms of its biodiversity. The combination of geographical location between North and South America, its geological history that creates a wide variety of soils, its variety of altitudes that create many different microclimates, and its climatic conditions all contribute to this biodiversity. In fact, Costa Rica is the most species dense (number of species/area) nation in Central America.

All of the photographs in this gallery except the two frogs noted were made in natural settings (i.e. no captive animals).
