Late afternoon after rainstorm

Late afternoon after rainstorm

From my journal on our last night on the Flotel: “It’s sunset now with nameless colors in the sky. Forest and Andes mountains with Sumaco volcano silhouetted in the west. Cirrus, altocirrus, and cirrostratus clouds layer like a cake. In the northwest, giant pink artist’s stroke through the sky. Blue flames shooting out of sunset of grey and purple skies over the Andes 160 km away. More color in the sky; blue overhead with white clouds. I have never seen such pure colors in the sunset; everything is clearly marked – clouds, horizon, Andes, sky. An ultimate number of shades and tones in the clouds. Infinite gradations from the lightest to the darkest tones. A broad rainbow appears in the east off the stern. Shades of peach and yellow glint off the river. Bats swoop over the river and above our heads as we sip our beer and Pisco sours. So dramatic.”
